One possible alternative is to look at cutting out through motor traffic (e.g. travelling between Shoot Up Hill (A5)  and Finchley Road). There might be scope for filtering Mill Lane somewhere near the railway bridge. But any such scheme would have to ensure that the motor traffic doesn't use alternative local roads such as Fordwych Road.

Filtering would be an ideal solution then (helping to alleviate the chronic traffic volumes on West Lane also?).

Perhaps bus gates ate either end of the stretch between junctions with Gondahar Gdns and Westbere Road - diverting west bound traffic onto Gondahar
and east bound onto Westbere - rendering the short stretch between the turn-offs completely traffic free excepting buses/bikes.

Allowing time for drivers to get the message, evaporation would be unlikely not to occur - as rat running access is denied.

(I recommended bus gates on another section of the C11 bus route - outside Brookfield School in Dartmouth Park -  where incidentally,
nearby Dartmouth Park Hill is closed off temporarily at the Tufnell Park Junction - another desperately needed solution - though with the additional tweaks to keep the SAT NAV brigade at bay).

With bus gates placed where I suggest on Millfield, this should do away with the need for further measures (as far as I can see).

Your idea about bike lanes on either side of a single lane of motor traffic seems at first to be attractive because there would probably be room for some car parking as well – taking out car parking on a large scale tends to be ruled out as a solution.

But there is one big snag: the C11 bus route runs in both directions along Mill Lane between West End Lane and Westbere Road. It then continues on Westbere Road past Hampstead School. So Mill lane is going to need room for a two way bus route and bus stops.

Mill Lane is an absolute rat run - and drivers go very fast - not sure if its wide enough for a cycle lane but more traffic calming measures couldn't hurt.

Re: Ideas for improvements in Fortune Green area

There should be serious consideration then, in this case (along with all others where two lane traffic is an outdated extravagance),
to have a single one way traffic lane with two bike lanes each side.

The working example at Tavistock Place should be reproduced and expanded across the borough.

Mill Lane is an absolute rat run - and drivers go very fast - not sure if its wide enough for a cycle lane but more traffic calming measures couldn't hurt.

Ideas for improvements in Fortune Green area

Jean Dollimore

Camden Council has funding for a scheme to address rat-running through residential streets in Fortune Green to avoid using the the parallel A5 corridor on Shoot Up Hill.

They are particularly interested in Westbere Road where there is a large secondary school (Hampstead School).

The study will also address pedestrian, cycling and road safety improvements, particularly for the school e.g. walking or cycling to school from the catchment area.

Camden Cyclists have offered to send suggestions for improvements in the area so please have a think and reply to this email with any ideas you have.

Jean

===========

The study area is bounded on the west by a line between Fordwych Road and Shoot Up Hill
on the south by Mill Lane
on the north Richborough Road and then Horton Avenue
on the east by a line that runs round edge of UCS Sports Ground and Hampstead cemetery then along Agamemnon Road.

See the attached map

Hi John,

Well be doing some flyering the first two Wednesdays/Thursdays in December (more details below) to promote a nine-question survey to collect information on peoples cycling journeys. Their responses will help us to work smarter and focus on the campaigns that matter to all London cyclists.

Would anyone from the local group be interested in either coming to join on any of those days, or perhaps take a stack and complete some flyering other days this month?

We would be very grateful for any additional woman/man power you guys can provide well also be heavily promoting this via social, but having people on the ground is no doubt a great way to get the level of response were looking for.

Dates: Wednesday 6th

Thursday 7th

Wednesday 13th

Thursday 14th

Time: 8:00AM 9:00AM

Bring: LCC branded clothing (t-shirts, jackets, hats, tabards, etc.) along with your stack of flyers (these will be distributed to you ahead of your flyering slot).

Locations.

1. Corner of Tavistock Place and Woburn Place, with cycle traffic going westbound

2. Outside of Waterstones, 82 Gower St, Bloomsbury, London WC1E 6EQ. Both east and westbound cycle traffic should be good, but have been told westbound might be more lucrative

Kind regards

Sarah

Dirty air is killing our children. Why does the government let this happen?

George Monbiot

Wednesday 29 November 2017 05.59 GMT

Deregulation, the government and many newspapers assure us, saves money and time and reduces frustration. That’s the theory. But, as I see every day, it doesn’t quite work like this.

My youngest daughter’s school has been trying to protect its children from the toxic cloud in which they work and play. The teachers know how much damage traffic pollution does to their lungs, hearts and brains. They know that it reduces their cognitive development, their ability to concentrate and their capacity for exercise. They know it’s a minor miracle that no one has yet been crushed by the cars jostling to get as close as possible to the school gates. But thanks to the government’s refusal to legislate, there is little they can do.

Far from freeing us from effort, the absence of regulation wastes everybody’s time.

At my suggestion, the school invited the charity Living Streets to come in and enthuse the children about walking or cycling to school. I attended the first assembly, at which one of their organisers spoke. She was lively, funny and captivating. With the help of a giant puppet, and the promise of badges if they joined in, the children went wild for her and for the cause. The school, led by its committed headteacher, has done everything it can to support the scheme.

For a few weeks, it worked. Everyone noticed the difference. No longer were cars mounting the pavement – and almost mounting each other – outside the gates. The children were using their legs, and families were talking to each other on the way. But the cars have crept back in, and now, though the clever and catchy programme continues, we’re almost back where we started: school begins and ends under a cloud.

Some of the drivers are the people who were elbowing in before; others occupy the space vacated by those who respect the scheme. Living Streets will keep returning. But now that the first flush of enthusiasm has abated, sustaining the programme will be harder.

Aside from the damage to our children’s health, it’s the redundancy of it all that gets to me. The government could solve much of this problem at a stroke by introducing a duty on councils to impose the kind of parking ban around schools at arrival and departure times that is in place in parts of Edinburgh and Solihull. Technologies such as number plate recognition cameras and rising bollards (both of which allow residents and drivers with a disability card to pass while excluding others) can make enforcement automatic.

Without this intervention, headteachers all over the country have to take on the issue one car at a time. Add up their efforts and you’re likely to find that this pointless replication runs into hundreds – perhaps thousands – of times the public labour that government action would require. If there is one group of people whose time is both stretched and socially valuable, it is headteachers.

Some schools have lobbied their councils for traffic restriction orders, generally without success. But why should we have to fight the same battle borough by borough for our children’s health? Why should their lung capacity be subject to a postcode lottery?

———————————

Self-regulation can work well in a commons – a resource controlled and managed by a community. But the streets are not a commons. They are a state asset that is treated as a free-for-all. When the state owns a resource but won’t control it, the community has neither the right nor the power to regulate its use. All that is left is voluntarism. The efforts of those who try to defend the common good are undermined by freeloaders.

The government’s efforts are pathetic. Its cycling and walking investment strategy, published among a blizzard of measures in April before ministers went into purdah for the distraction of the general election, is based on this rousing vision: “We want more people to have access to safe, attractive routes for cycling and walking by 2040.” Yes, 2040.

They bailed out the banks in hours. But our children’s health can wait until they have children of their own.

It intends to halve its feeble investment in cycling and walking between now and 2021.

Official stats show that cycle use in London set to overtake car use

Steven Edwards <stevenaedwards@...>

Bike Biz)

Thursday, November 23rd 2017 at 7:51PM GMT

A Twitter user has created a startling graph showing that, on the current trajectory, cycle use in central London will soon overtake use of private motor vehicles. @lastnotlost created the graph using official figures contained in today's release of Transport Statistics Great Britain 2017
The statistics compendium from the Department for Transport is released annually. The graph was produced with raw data contained in TSGB0106 – "People entering central London during morning peak" – and shows that since 2003 car use has been in a steep decline and cycle use has been on a corresponding growth spurt. Use of taxis and motorcycles have also reduced, but at a much slower rate.

People in cities want segregated space for cycling

Steven Edwards <stevenaedwards@...>

road cc)

Sarah Barth November 19 2017

Four out of five people want protected cycleways in cities, to improve safety even at the expense of other traffic.

The biggest assessment to date of the UK’s cities found that 78 per cent say they would like segregated infrastructure, and 69 per cent think more cycling would make their city a better place to live and work.

Bike Life, produced by the charity Sustrans, found that out of 7,700 people surveyed, most think that more space for cycling and walking or buses, as opposed to more space for cars, is the best way to keep their city moving, improve people’s health or air quality.

Sixty four per cent of the respondents would cycle more if on-road cycle routes physically separated from traffic and pedestrians were available.

Even people who said they never ride a bike still overwhelmingly support the provision of segregated bike routes (74%); for those cycling frequently this figure rose to 87%.

Currently, a total of just 19 miles of cycle lanes on roads, physically separated from traffic and pedestrians exist in six of the seven cities investigated: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Greater Manchester and Newcastle (excluding Birmingham where no data is available).

Only six per cent of the residents surveyed usually travel to and from work by bicycle and just 30% think cycling safety in their city is good.

Three-quarters (75 per cent) support more investment in cycling.

Bike Life also found that people cycling in the seven cities take up to 111,564 cars off roads each day. If these cars were lined up, this would equate to a 333 mile tailback – a distance greater than from Cardiff to Newcastle.

Xavier Brice, CEO for Sustrans said: “Bike Life shows that most people living in the seven cities say cycling is a good thing and are far more supportive of bold and ambitious plans for cycling than decision-makers often think. They want dedicated space for people on bicycles even when this means taking space away from cars.

“From Mexico City to Manchester, mayors around the world are waking up to the fact that their cities need to be designed around people, not motor vehicles and that investing in cycling is key to keeping their city moving, and improving health and economic vitality.

Monday 20th - to Town Hall instead of PHCA...URGENT.. Delancey–Pratt under threat

Jean Dollimore

Dear all,

We would normally have been holding our monthly meeting at Primrose Hill but an emergency has arisen!

A group of residents has sent to Camden Council a petition with over 500 signatures against the Delancey–Pratt schem. This obliges the Council to debate the matter at a full council meeting.

This will be happening on Monday evening and John Chamberlain will be leading a deputation supporting the scheme.

It is likely that the pettioners will bring a crowd to the gallery … so it could help our case if we manage to create our own crowd of supporters.

Please do come, if you can, to Town Hall, Judd Street. Mon 2th Nov, 7pm. And bring others with you

You can read further the details in our website post at:
